Impossible Creatures
A dazzling adventure
After hearing lots of praise for the book, I decided to try Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell. I wanted to see if it was everything reviews said, but even getting a hold of the book was a challenge! I had to wait weeks to get a copy from my library, but it was definitely worth the wait!
In a land called the Archipelago Islands, hidden from the common world, is a place where mythical creatures roam, and magic is in the air. Mal lives in the Archipelago, but she is being hunted and on the run to survive, traveling with her treasured griffin, Gelifen. She finds her path intertwines with a boy staying with his grandfather in the Scottish highlands named Christopher. The magic in the Archipelago is dying, and Christopher joins Mal on a quest to save it. Together, they must escape Mal’s pursuers and restore the magic. If they don’t, all the wonders and fantastic creatures will vanish forever.
This clever adventure was thrilling and carried deep meaning, not to mention the beautiful descriptions. One of the messages was that although there is a great deal of darkness in the world, there is also an abundance of light. The characters also had a strong friendship, another powerful theme. I especially loved the intense battle scenes that kept me turning pages late into the night! However, sensitive readers should take note, since some scenes can be violent. I really appreciate the vivid detail Katherine Rundell uses that truly transports you into another world. All this makes it easy to recommend this book.
As a side note, the physical book is gorgeous! It has a red and gold spine and a vividly illustrated cover. If you buy Impossible Creatures, you’ll be in for a treat before you even open the book! I included the amazon link that you can find using the button.
Impossible Creatures was exuberant and amazing! I would 100% recommend trying this book. It was a great read!
